How to play video poker
In video poker a player starts the game by entering a certain amount of money into the slot machine provided. One can either use money or a bar-coded paper for this purpose. After placing the required amount of credit the player gets to 'deal'. Dealing requires each player to trade in his existing cards for new ones from the virtual deck of cards provided. It is not mandatory to trade cards; however most players do it to improve the value of their hand. A hand is a set of 5 cards that follows a predefined pattern. For example, the Royal Flush hand comprises the following cards – Ace, King, Queen, Jack and 10. Every hand will have a certain value and the player with the highest value hand wins. Once cards are traded, betting begins. Betting refers to a process by which each player makes a verbal declaration or performs some action. This binds the player to their claimed actions so that they cannot change it later on seeing someone else's actions. For example, a player may fold by surrendering his cards or may check by tapping the table etc.
After this, the slot machine evaluates each player's hand with the list of winning hands given in its posted pay schedule. If the player's hands matches with any one of the winning sets, he is the winner. Usually the game starts with a minimum value of hands comprising jacks. The payout will depend on either how rare the hand is and also how much the operator is willing to provide.
Types of video poker
There are many variations to the free play video poker that has evolved because of the popularity involved. These are however, all variations to the traditional five card draw poker. The most common type is the Deuces Wild, in which a particular card serves as a wild card. A wild card is a card that could have any face value but is treated like the Joker – that is, it can change its value depending on the set it is complementing. Some wild cards are designated as full wild in which case, the card holder determines its value. For example, if the player has an existing set – 3 of spades, 3 of hearts, then the wild card can be used a 3 of diamonds or 3 of clubs. That is, it can take on the value that will complete the set. Other wild cards are treated as bugs. Such wild cards are usually provided the value of an Ace, unless the card can complete a straight flush. A straight flush is a set of cards that comprises a sequence. For example, let's say the player has a set of cards – 3,4,5, and 7 of hearts. The wild card can be used as a 6 of hearts to make a straight flush. If the player has a different set – 2,4,8,9 of spades, the wild card would be considered as having a value of Ace because even if used in the set, it won't create a sequence.
